Autumn Joy Sedum (Hylotelephium 'Autumn Joy') is a, hardy, low-maintenance perennial (Zones 3-9) prized for its dramatic transformation from broccoli-like green buds in summer to deep rust-red, 18-24 inch tall blooms in fall. It requires full sun and well-drained, even poor, soil. It is highly drought-tolerant, attracts pollinators, and provides winter interest.

Key Care Requirements & Characteristics

  • Light: Full sun (at least 6 hours/day) is essential to prevent weak, floppy growth.
  • Soil: Thrives in dry to average, well-drained, sandy, or gravelly soil. It does not tolerate wet, boggy, or overly fertile soil.
  • Water: Drought-tolerant once established. Water only when the soil is completely dry.
  • Maintenance: Generally maintenance-free. Cut back in early spring to encourage new growth; it can be pruned in late spring if it becomes too leggy.
  • Size: Grows in a tight, upright clump roughly 1.5–2 feet tall and wide.
  • Propagation: Divide clumps every 3-4 years in spring.

Common Issues and Tips

  • Rot: The primary issue is root or crown rot, caused by too much moisture or poor drainage.
  • Pests: Occasionally affected by aphids or mealybugs.
  • Flopping: Over-fertilizing or insufficient sunlight can cause the stems to fall over.
  • Uses: Ideal for rock gardens, mixed borders, and in mass plantings. It is deer and rabbit resistant.

This popular succulent keeps its shape well after the bloom fades, providing dried flower heads that stand up to winter weather and offer food for birds.
