#3 Gallon

Andropogon gerardii 'Blackhawks' is a striking, tall, upright perennial prairie grass (4–5 ft tall, 2 ft wide) known for its dramatic color transition, starting deep green in summer and turning near-black by fall. It thrives in full sun, requires little maintenance, is drought-tolerant, and provides winter structure and wildlife habitat.

Key Features & Characteristics

  • Color Transformation: Foliage is dark green to purple in summer, turning deep purple to black by late September/fall, and finally, a burnt sienna in winter.
  • Growth Habit: Upright, clump-forming grass that forms tight, upright columns with strong roots.
  • Flowers: Produces 3-parted, finger-like, purplish flower clusters (similar to "turkey feet") in late summer.
  • Size: Grows to a height of 4 to 5 feet, including the flower spikes.

Cultivation and Maintenance

  • Light: Full sun is required for best color and to prevent falling over.
  • Soil: Adapts to a wide range of soils, including clay, sand, and poor, infertile conditions.
  • Water: Drought-tolerant once established.
  • Maintenance: Cut back to 4-6 inches in late winter or early spring.
  • Hardiness: Zones 4a–8b.

Landscape Uses

  • Mass Plantings/Screens: Ideal for vertical interest in gardens, prairies, or as a screen.
  • Color Contrast: Pairs well with bright-colored perennials like Achillea 'Moonshine' (Yarrow) or Salvia yangii (Russian Sage).
  • Winter Interest: Stands up well to snow, providing structure throughout winter.
